The Apothecary Diaries Episode 18: Recap
At the beginning of episode 18, Maomao was awoken by a nightmare from when she was still a baby, in which a disguised man attempted to stab her. This real memory introduces a whole new mystery about her upbringing.
The scene then shifts to Maomao visiting the Verdigris House, where she encounters Pairin and Old Granny. After a brief chat with them, she proceeds to the annex, where she delivers medicine from her father to a mysterious woman.
We come to find out more about the woman's condition. It turns out the rashes covering her body are due to syphilis, which she contracted through her courtesan work. Maomao reflects on the woman's circumstances and how she became isolated in the annex due to her inability to please customers.
Later, we see Lakan visiting Jinshi. During his unpleasant visit, Lakan confronts Jinshi for keeping his daughter away from him. This officially confirms the blood relation between Lakan and Maomao. Lakan then insists that Jinshi inform Maomao of his desire to meet her.
Deliberating whether this is the right thing to do, Jinshi goes to Maomao and informs her of the strange man's request. Her expression, filled with what seems to be hatred upon hearing the message, shocks Jinshi. It becomes apparent to everyone that Maomao knew all along that Lakan was her real father.
The episode ends with Maomao discovering a plant garden being maintained by Suirei. The two of them engage in a conversation about plants when Suirei suddenly mentions her desire to plant an herb that can resurrect people. Maomao seems thrilled by the idea and asks Suirei more about it, only to realize that Suirei was joking.
This leaves us wondering why Maomao gets excited by the thought of resurrection medicine and if there is someone in particular she would want to bring back.
